In Infra-red (IR) Neurofeedback, a sensor measures subtle changes in heat radiation coming from the forehead, resulting from alterations in the brain's metabolic (energy consuming) activity. Mental activities such as concentration push the brain to work harder metabolically. So IR neurofeedback is a means of training the brain at the physiological level, to improve mental performance and emotional balance. It's an example of a truly mind-body approach.

Neurofeedback leads to lasting change - it stimulates structural change in the brain, or neuroplasticity.

The Prefrontal Cortex and Executive Function

Behind the forehead is the prefrontal cortex (PFC) which is heavily involved in functions such as:

  • Steady focus or concentration
  • Formulating intentions, goals and plans, and sticking to them or adapting them
  • Emotional balance and body regulation
  • Emotional drive and motivation
  • Empathy

Collectively these are known as executive function. They can be compromised in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Neurofeedback Training

Neurofeedback is a means of developing executive function. You can hire equipment for home use. Changes develop gradually over time, with consistent practice.
